Convalidación o homologación de títulos in Spain

If you want to pursue university or doctoral studies in Spain, or if you want to practice certain occupations, you will likely need to go through the process of convalidación o homologación de títulos. Basically, this means having an official body recognize that your studies are equivalent to the Spanish studies needed to be a doctor, teacher, etc. or needed to pursue a graduate-level degree.

I personally have never bothered with this, but I do know one girl who did. She was a native English teacher from a non-European country who had a Master’s degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language and several years of experience as an English language teacher. Because she didn’t have her degree from a Spanish university, she could not get a job as a teacher in an official school – so she was stuck taking assistant teaching jobs in private bilingual schools. She applied to “convalidate” her degree – and was rejected. On top of that, they kept all of the documents she had turned in, including original copies of some files.

Of course, that’s just the story of one person. Others may have more success. And, depending what it is you need or want to do, you may have no option than to go through the "convalidation" process.

A list of jobs for which you must have your degree certified or made equivalent to a Spanish degree can be found on the Web site of the Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia.
