Requirements for EU citizens who want to drive in Spain

Non-resident EU citizens can legally drive in Spain with a valid driver’s license from their home country. However, an EU citizen with residence in Spain should exchange their license for a Spanish driver’s license at the Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico within six months of declaring residency in Spain.

You will need to fill out some forms, pay the fee, and present the following:

The original and one copy of the driver’s license from your home country.

The original and one copy of your NIE or residence card.

Two photographs measuring 35mm x 25mm.

For information on fees, go to the Dirección General de Tráfico.

Requirements for non-EU citizens who want to drive in Spain

An International Driving Permit accompanied by your domestic driver’s license will let you drive legally in Spain for one year. For more information on obtaining the International Driver’s Permit, click on the appropriate link: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, U.S.

If you are granted residency in Spain, your domestic license is valid for six months after gaining residency. You must apply for a Spanish license no later than six months after gaining residency if you plan to drive in Spain.

To get your Spanish driver’s license, you will need to take a driving test, which entails going to a Spanish driving school. The process can be long and quite expensive, but there’s no way around it. Through the school, you will take classes, a multiple-choice written exam (you can request an exam in English), and a behind-the-wheel driving test. Having done all this and passed a medical and eye exam, you are ready to apply for a Spanish driver’s license at the Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico.

You will need to fill out some forms, pay the fee, and present the following:

Passport or residency card/NIE.

Informe de aptitude psicofísica – from your driving school – with a 35mm x 25mm photograph attached.

Two additional photographs measuring 35mm x 25mm. They must be identical to the photo attached to your driving school report.

Original and one copy of your driver’s license from home. The original will be returned to you.

For information on fees, go to the Dirección General de Tráfico.

In addition to sorting out an international driving license or Spanish driving license, you should also consider whether your auto insurance covers you when you are driving abroad.
