Passport requirements to enter Spain

Citizens of the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand need a valid passport (no visa required) to enter Spain for a stay of up to 90 days as a tourist or student. Note that the 90-day limit includes any travel to other EU or Schengen Area countries. To be valid, a non-EU passport cannot expire for at least six months after entry into Spain or other Schengen territories.

Citizens of South Africa require a valid passport and a Schengen Visa to enter Spain.

Citizens of the U.K. and Ireland can normally use their national identity card to enter, but it is advisable to bring your passport as well. An EU passport only needs to be valid until the end of the expected stay (if this is less than six months).

If you think you will outstay the validity of your passport, you may want to renew it before leaving for Spain. It tends to be cheaper to process a passport renewal in your home country. Information on renewing Australian, Canadian, Irish, New Zealand, South African, U.K., and U.S. passports in Spain is given below.

If your passport is lost or stolen while you’re in Spain, report it immediately to the local police and THEN go to the nearest embassy or consulate to get a replacement passport.
