Traveling by subway in Spain

Barcelona, Bilbao, Madrid, and Valencia are currently the only four Spanish cities with underground railway stations (metro). Sevilla is scheduled to open its subway system in September 2008. Málaga is also constructing an underground railway system.

Below you will find the basic fares and times for the Spanish metro systems. There may be supplemental fares for rides between different zones (e.g., Madrid MetroSur). Most multi-ride tickets are valid for both the metro and the public buses in Spain. For more information on any of the Spanish underground systems, click on the city names below.

Always keep your subway ticket with you until you exit the station at your final destination. You may need your ticket to exit certain stations and occasionally Metro personnel come on the trains to review passengers’ tickets.
