Types of accommodation in SpainSpain is full of unique lodgings, from monasteries converted into five-star paradores to rural houses with large gardens and mountain views. Below you’ll find quick descriptions of the main types of hotels and inns available in Spain as well as some suggested Web sites to book hotels in Spain.
Hostels A hostel consists of rooms with several bunk beds and shared bathrooms. They tend to be cheap (around 15 euros/night for a bed in a shared room) and are also a good way to meet people if you are backpacking through Spain. There are a number of Web sites that give you price comparisons and booking options for hostels in Spain, such as: hostelbookers hostelsclub Hostelworld hostelz
Hostales and pensiones Hostales and pensiones are often family-run businesses with very basic rooms. Some rooms have their own small bathrooms but many have only a sink, and the shared shower and toilet are down the hall. Quality varies greatly, but you can often get a sense of the modernity and amenities by visiting their Web sites and comparing prices – there does seem to be a good correlation between price and quality. Posadas A posada is a Spanish inn that usually has a restaurant and bar as well. Spanish posadas are often rustic style and family-owned. Casa Rurales “Rural houses” (often in mountainous areas of Spain or country settings) are a great budget options for people traveling in groups. In most cases, you can rent the entire casa rural in Spain for a very reasonable price (sometimes less than 10€ per person, depending how many people are in your group). Some casas rurales are more like hotels, renting out individual rooms or apartments, but they still tend to be cheaper than traditional hotels. Quality varies greatly, but you should be able to find photos of the facilities online. There are several Web sites that focus exclusively on Spanish casa rurales, such as: clubrural Mi Casa Rural Rurismo TuriSpain
Monasteries Another interesting and cheap option for accommodation in Spain is to stay in a Spanish monastery. While some historic Spanish monasteries have been reformed into hotels and no longer hold any religious significance, there are active monasteries in Spain that offer beds or rooms to travelers of any faith. The book Lodging in Spain’s Monasteries by Eileen Barish has information on staying at Spanish monasteries. You can also find an online guide to Spanish monastery hotels at Guias Monasterios
Paradores Spanish paradores are government-owned luxury hotels, usually converted from historic buildings such as palaces, convents, castles, and monasteries. There are currently about 90 paradores in Spain, with several more in the works. Go to the official Parador Web site to reserve a room at a parador in Spain.
