Who can receive medical care in Spain?EU citizens who are visiting Spain are automatically entitled to the same care as Spaniards through agreements with the national health systems of EU countries. (Find out more about the European Health Insurance Card for EU citizens.)
Non-EU citizens visiting Spain need to have private health insurance or traveler's insurance. You will find links to some travel insurance providers at the bottom of this page.
Medical emergencies in SpainIn a life-or-death situation, go to the nearest hospital. Private or public, insured or not, it doesn’t matter. ALL HOSPITALS IN SPAIN – BOTH PRIVATE AND PUBLIC – MUST PROVIDE CARE IN A LIFE-OR-DEATH EMERGENCY SITUATION.
If you need an ambulance, call 112. In bigger cities, they may have English-speaking operators. To request an ambulance in Spanish, say: "ˇNecesito una ambulancia!” (“I need an ambulance!”) “ˇEs urgente!” (“It’s an emergency!”)
In an emergency situation that is not a matter of life or death, go to the nearest private hospital.
English-speaking doctors in SpainIf you feel more comfortable visiting an English-speaking doctor in Spain, your local embassy or consulate in Spain should have a list of English-speaking physicians in Spain. Your private insurer may be able to help as well.
